THEOLOGICAL
CONSIDERATION OF THE GENTILES A. Jews and Gentiles in Christ was a
Mystery (Ep 3:1-12) 1. A mystery (mustārion
- known only through God’s revelation) was made known to Paul, the
apostle to the Gentiles (Ep 3:1-3; Ro 11:13) 2. This mystery was previously unknown, but now
made known through the prophets and apostles (Ep 3:4-5). 3. The mystery was that Gentiles were
included in the promise of Jesus Christ (Ep 3:6-7). 4. This mystery was God’s predetermined plan
according to His eternal purpose (Ep 3:8-12). B. God’s Predetermined Plan Revealed in the
OT (Ac 15:16-17) 1. It was brought to light through the
apostles (Ep 3:4-5; See also #2, #3, #4). 2. It was included in the Abrahamic Covenant
(Ge 12:3; 26:4; 28:14 cf. Ac 3:25; Ga 3:8). 3. It was included in the prophets (Amos
9:11-12 cf. Ac 15:16-17). 4. It was taught by the apostle Paul in
Romans (Ro 15:9-13). a) Quotation from 2 Samuel (2Sa 22:50; Ps
18:49) b) Quotation from Deuteronomy (Dt 32:43) c) Quotation from Psalms (Ps 117:1) d) Quotation from Isaiah (Is 11:10) C. The Jews were to Bring the Light to the
Gentiles (Ac 13:47) 1. Christ was the Light (Is 9:1-2; Is 42:6
cf. Lk 2:32). 2. The Jews were to reflect the Light to the
Gentiles (Is 51:4; Is 60:1-3 cf. Ac 26:23). 3. The Jews were to bring the Light to the
Gentiles (Is 42:6; 49:6 cf. Ac 13:47). D. The Gentiles are to Move the Jews to
Jealousy (Ro 11:11) 1. God has not rejected Israel (Ro 11:1-6). 2. Israel is experiencing a partial
hardening (Ro 11:7-10). 3. Salvation came to the Gentiles to make
Israel jealous (Ro 11:11-14). D. God will Restore the Light to the Jews
(Ro 11:25) 1. Since salvation is by grace, Gentiles
must not become proud (Ro 11:15-24). 2. God will restore Israel after the
fullness of the Gentiles (Ro 11:25-29). 3. God’s perfect plan is according to His
mercy (Ro 11:30-32). 4. God’s perfect plan is according to His
wisdom (Ro 11:33-36). |
