A.    Compound Names Of God

1.     Elohim

a)    El Shaddai

(1)   Shaddai (shadday) is said by some to be connected with the Akkadian word, sadu, which means "mountain." Thus El Shaddai would translate into English something like "God/El of the mountain," or “king of the hill.”

(2)   El Shaddai was the name God communicated to the patriarchs (Ge 28:3; 49:25) before revealing Himself as Yahweh to Moses (Ex 6:3 cf. Ex 3:14-15). It is not to the hills (natural phenomenon) that these men of faith looked for confidence but to the Lord of these hills, the Lord of the mountain (cf. Ps 121:1-2).

(3)   Summarizing El Shaddai, it carries the meaning of “all powerful,” and is usually translated, “God Almighty.”

(4)   God used El Shaddai when He met with Abraham in regard to His covenant. He  reiterated His promise to Abram and therefore, changed Abram’s name to Abraham (“father of a multitude”) (Ge 17:1-5).

(5)   God was known by Job as El Shaddai (Jb 6:4, 14) and it was the name God used when confronting Job concerning His sovereign power (Jb 40:1-2).

(6)   Believers will find rest in the shadow of El Shaddai (Psa 91:1) even though vengeance and destruction come upon the wicked (Is 13:6).

b)    El Elyon

(1)   Elyon is a word that means highest or upper-most. In regard to God, it declares His total supremacy over all other gods. (Ps 97:9; Ps 83:18). Therefore, it is translated, “Most High God.”

(2)   Melchizedek king of Salem, was a priest of El Elyon (Ge 14:18-22 first usage). Melchizedek was a priest before the Aaronic priesthood, of whose order is Christ (Ps 110:4; He 5:6, 10).

(3)   It was to El Elyon that Satan likened himself and ascribed himself to (Is 14:12-14). However, he would be cast down to Sheol by the true Most High (Is 14:15).

(4)   It is El Elyon’s shelter in which the believer dwells (Ps 91:1). It is there that the believer finds peace in El Elyon’s presence (Ps 46:4). Therefore, it is El Elyon that deserves the believer’s praise (Ps 92:1).

c)     El Olam

(1)   Olam means something that is perpetual, forever, and everlasting. Therefore, El Olam is translated “everlasting God.”

(2)   El Olam is from everlasting to everlasting (Ps 90:2).

(3)   Since God is El Olam (the everlasting God), His truth is everlasting (Ps 117:2), His lovingkindness is everlasting (Ps 118:2), and His righteousness is everlasting (Ps 119:142).

(4)   Abraham called upon and worshipped the, “everlasting God” because of His everlasting covenants (Gen 21:33). Only an everlasting God (El Olam) can make and keep an everlasting covenant (Ge 17:7-8).

(5)   El Olam does not become weary or tired, not even when He created the ends of the earth. Man cannot fathom such everlasting longevity and power (Is 40:28). It is El Olam who gives renewing strength to the believer as he waits upon Him. El Olam undergirds the believer with everlasting arms (Is 40:29-31 cf. Php 4:13; Dt 33:27 cf. Jn 10:28-29).

d)    El Roi

(1)   The root meaning of roi means, “to see,” Therefore, God is the God from which nothing is hidden because He sees all.

(2)   Hagar had run away from Sarai and Abraham. No one could find her. However, the God who sees (El Roi) saw her. In response to her discussion with God, she called the Lord, El Roi (Gen 16:13).

(3)   Not only was Hagar under the all-seeing eye of El Roi, but He had looked upon her situation with a protective eye. As a result, he saved her life, encouraged her to go back to the life she was called to, and blessed her offspring.

(4)   This name of God is a comfort to those who walk with the Lord for God always has His protective eye upon them and encourages them to resume living for Him.

(5)   Furthermore, the Lord is all-seeing toward His enemies. Justice will be served in His timing. In the meantime, with protective eyes, He righteously observes all that is brought against His children.
